Monday morning.
Peace.
The weekend was a busy one, a fully working weekend. Today I am home.
Reading. Writing. Being still.
No meetings. No pre-determined schedule.
In our basement, we can hear the metro go by. It took us months to notice. It sounded like a gentle wind or rain in the background. But then one day we realized we can’t actually hear weather down here. What IS that sound? We tuned in, listened, heard the faint rhythm of wheels on tracks beneath the intermittent whoosh.
Now it is the gentle sound of home.
I love it. It makes me feel connected to the city, even while I’m tucked in below ground. Safe. Warm. Hidden away. A familiar scripture floats through my mind.
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
Psalms 91:1
I read the whole psalm, here.
Sometimes footsteps click briskly along the sidewalk above, but not today. It snowed last night. Winter boots on freshly fallen snow barely make any sound at all.
Soon the garbage truck will rumble onto our street, and I’ll hear the bins being emptied and rolled back to their place at the curb.
I’m looking forward to the stillness of this day. I breathe deeply.
Pour a second cup of coffee.
Pray.
And listen to the gentle sound of the metro going by.
Peace to you today.
